Student performs in senior recital Saturday night

On November 17, 2013

The Smith Music Recital Hall was alive with the sounds of classical music Saturday night as Sarah Riddle performed her senior recital.

Riddle, a music education major with a secondary major in special education, sang twelve classical pieces accompanied by Mark Smith on the piano. The pieces included works from composers like Richard Strauss and Wolfgang Mozart, and the songs included German, French and English lyrics.

The senior recital is a requirement of the School of Music and Theatre in order to graduate with a musical education degree. Riddle said that the recital is a great way to showcase her progress as a singer.

Though she has been singing her whole life, Riddle said that she began singing classically when she became a student at Marshall University and focuses primarily on coloratura soprano.

“Once I found a knack for it at school, that’s what I put most of my time, focus and attention in,” she said.

The last song performed, “Der Holle Rache,” was a piece that Riddle previously sang as the Queen of the Night in the Marshall School of Music and Theatre’s production of the Magic Flute earlier this year.

Daniel Ricks, music education senior, enjoyed Riddle’s recital.

“I thought tonight’s performance was really great,” Ricks said. “It’s nice to see our peers and colleges we have classes with put on all of their hard work for the semester in this one performance. It was really nice to hear her work for this semester.”

Fellow senior music education major Alec Hunt agreed that hearing her work for the semester was entertaining.

“I thought it was wonderful. Sarah did a great job,” Hunt said. “You can tell she’s worked really hard this semester. All the hard work paid off cause it was a great performance.”

Riddle hopes to attend graduate school sometime after she graduates.
