Marshall University cafeterias are collecting canned food to donate to the Huntington Area Food Bank until Nov. 12 in the hope of setting a world record.

Chris Wellman, marketing coordinator for Sodexo, said the goal is to set a world record for the most canned food collected.

“The Marshall Dining Service will be teaming up with other campus dining services around the country to reach that goal,” Wellman said.

The current record for most canned food collected is 388,381 pounds.

“While collecting food for those in need is the primary goal, we hope that the attempt at a world record will generate additional interest on campus,” Wellman said.

Collection bins are available in the Memorial Student Center Food Court and the John Marshall Room.  Harless and the Twin Towers cafeterias are also collecting canned food and donations of one Flex Dollar.  Flex Dollars are available on student meal plans.
“After donating the one Flex Dollar, students can put their name on a handprint and it will be hung up in the dining hall,” Wellman said.

The final collection will be at the Harless dining hall at 2 p.m. Nov. 12.

According to Sodexo’s Web site, approximately 35 million people are at risk for hunger in the United States.  The Sodexo Foundation, a branch of Sodexo focused on supporting hunger-related initiatives, has given grants to hunger organizations totaling more than $11 million.

The Sodexo Foundation supports several programs such as Feeding Our Future, The Campus Kitchens Project, STOP Hunger Scholarships, Heroes of Everyday Life, Community Kitchen and Sodexo Servathon.

More information about Sodexo’s contributions can be found at HelpStopHunger.org or Sodexo’s Web site, www.sodexo.com.

In addition to its contribution to hunger-related organizations, Sodexo is organizing a “go trayless” day scheduled for Nov. 17 in the Twin Towers and Harless cafeterias.  Cheryl King, general manager of Sodexo, said more information about this event will be presented in the coming weeks.  She said this event is part of a “green initiative.”
