Nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards Show were announced Tuesday. The Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, is a Hollywood-filled event that recognizes movie actors, writers and directors for outstanding performances. Awards are given in categories such as Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Picture, Visual Effects, Directing and more.
Actress Anne Hathaway announced the nominees.
Nominations in the Best Picture category include “Avatar,” “The Blind Side,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and “Up.” “Avatar,” which is nominated for nine Oscars, made $77 million its opening weekend.
“Up,” which is also nominated for Animated Feature Film, Music and Sound Editing, is not the only Disney film nominated. Others include “The Princess and the Frog” and “Coraline,” both nominated for Animated Feature Film. It is a tough competition between “The Princess and the Frog” and “Up” because both were enjoyable and witty children’s movies.
The famous Harry Potter made the cut as well, with “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” in the running for Cinematography. We will have to see if Harry’s magic is enough to beat “Avatar” in this category.
Actors George Clooney, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman, Jeff Bridges and Jeremy Renner are nominated for Best Leading Actor. Best Leading Actress nominees include Meryl Streep for “Julie and Julia” and Sandra Bullock for her role in “The Blind Side.” Other nominees for this category are Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan and Gabourey Sidibe. I hope to see Meryl Streep win in this category. One of my favorite movies, Streep plays the part of Julia Child, who Time magazine once titled as “Our Lady of the Ladle” for her French cooking and television personality.
James Cameron’s “Avatar” earned a nomination in the Directing category. Along with Cameron are “The Hurt Locker’s” Kathryn Bigelow, “Inglourious Basterd’s” Quentin Tarantino and “Up In the Air’s” Jason Reitman. Director Lee Daniels is also a nominee for his work in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” Oscar night will be a battle of the exes for Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron who used to be married.
Matt Damon and Christopher Plummer are both nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and Penelope Cruz and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actress.
The Academy Awards Show will air at 8 p.m. March 7. Actors Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin will host. Academy Awards fans can visit oscar.go.com to view a full list of the categories and nominees, predict the winners and watch the trailers of the nominated films.
