Marshall students recently gathered more than one and a half tons of goods for evacuees of Hurricane Katrina currently housed in Camp Dawson in Preston County, W. Va.

The donations were delivered to the camp on Monday, Sept. 12. Donna Donathan, the Legal Assisting Program Coordinator in the Community & Technical College organized the drive along with fourth year medical student Robin Bush. Donathan said when she came to work Tuesday, Sept. 6, she sent an e-mail asking if anyone wanted to participate in a relief effort. She received a call from Bush the next day, asking if the School of Medicine could partner with them. The medical school students collected two shuttle buses full of items.

The refugees at Camp Dawson needed things such as baby items, adult personal care items, crafts and games, and people also donated items such as calendars, notebooks, phone cards and gift cards, Donathan said.

"It was just sort of unbelievable what people gave and what they did," she said.

The effort lasted for three days, ending Sept. 9, and the community gave generously. The boxes of goods spread from three offices in Corbly Hall into both sides of the hallway on the third floor. The donations very quickly filled the first truck volunteered, which was a pickup truck. Keith Earles of Tri-State Express, a trucking company headquartered in Huntington, filled the gap by volunteering to transport the goods to Camp Dawson.

"The outpouring that we got in such a short period of time has been amazing, but it has been my experience when you ask for help from the Marshall community, you get it overwhelmingly," Donathan said.

Volunteers stayed several hours that Sunday to help sort and box the items for transportation to the camp. The next morning at 7:30, items were brought to the curb for loading and were delivered to the camp that afternoon.
