The Keith Albee Performing Arts Center was packed to capacity Monday evening for the performance of “Cats.”
Starting at the street and not ending until the seats the Keith Albee was packed with people, every seat was full.
Marshall University students and Huntington community members showed up for the “longest running hit on Broadway.”
The show was part of the Marshall Artists Series 2009 - 2010 performance line up.
Before the performance began, Carrie Cline from WSAZ thanked all of the sponsors that made this production possible. Cline told the crowd that thanks to sponsors a special performance of “Cats” would happen Tuesday morning just for children.
The performance was split into two acts consisting of about ten songs each.
“The musical includes 20 of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless melodies, including the hit song, ‘Memory’,” according to the Marshall Artists Series Web site.
Each half of the musical was full of bright lights and special effects. The performance had fog, strobe lights and dramatic music. During the performance of “Mr. Mistoffelees,” silver streamers and confetti were shot into the audience.Noelle Kivett, freshman international business major, said she thought the performance was good.
“I always appreciate musicals because I can’t sing or dance really well.” Kivett said.
“I’ve never seen anything like it.” Stephanie Butcher, a sophomore nursing major, said.
“My favorite cat was the Rum Tum Tugger.” Butcher said, “He was crazy and fun, very entertaining.”
“Cats” is based on “Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot. The poems have been set to music and have been subject to only minor revisions according to the original director Trevor Nunn.
A sold out performance of “Cats” will take place Tuesday at 7:30p.m.
I definitely like what the Marshall Artists Series has to offer this semester, Kivett said.
“I like that the Marshall Artists Series gives us opportunities to see shows such as “Cats” for free,” Butcher said. “I really enjoy it.”
The Marshall Artists Series will have three more performance this semester as well as the Spring International Film Festival.
“An Evening with Lucille Ball: “Thank You for Asking” will be playing at 8p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23 at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center Students can get tickets at the Joan C. Edwards box office. The box office is open Monday through Friday
from noon to 5 p.m.
