Senate bill aids families of children with autism

Governor Joe Manchin visited Marshall's campus to sign a bill, the first of its kind, to aid families of children with autism Tuesday.

Senate Bill 1009 awards a tax deduction of up to $2,000 per year for families of children with autism when they contribute to a trust fund established for when the children become adults.

Tournament expected to benefit state economy, university

The Youth Soccer Region I National Tournament is coming to town and will boost the community's economy and reputation, making it one of the biggest events to hit West Virginia.

Jazz ensemble to perform in Europe

The Marshall University Jazz Ensemble will be performing in Europe.

The group will perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Jazz a Juan Festival in France. They will leave on Saturday and return July 13.

"It's a great opportunity to experience foreign culture," said Ed Bingham, director of the ensemble.

College announces essay contest

A $1,500 award is up for grabs in a new essay competition.

The John Marshall - Dan O'Hanlon Constitution Day Essay Competition was announced by the College of Liberal Arts in June, with $1,500 going to the winner and $750 going to the second-place essay.

O'Hanlon, a local circuit court judge and former chair of the MU Criminal Justice Department, announced the contest during a June 10 appearance on campus.

Volunteers promote healthcare reform

Five local volunteers Saturday came together to promote healthcare reform while collecting donations for the Ronald McDonald House in Huntington.

Motorcycle safety classes offered

An increasing number of students are riding motorcycles to class because of higher gas prices, cheaper vehicle payments and smaller insurance premiums, while ignoring their own safety.

Saving money can be beneficial, but statistics show that 4,778 motorcyclists were killed last year, according to the Motorcycle Accidents website.

Chadwick, McGraw named nation's top coaches

Actress plays on hit show 'True Blood'

Actress Carrie Preston did not know what to think when producer Alan Ball approached her about playing the role of Arlene Fowler in the TV series "True Blood."

"I was cast in this movie of his called 'Towel Head;' and while we were shooting, he said he was doing a pilot for HBO about vampires, which I thought was a little surprising because I knew what he had done before, and it was kind of a departure," Preston said.
