The "Wave of Compassion" benefit concert will take place at the Veteran's Memorial Field House March 24.

Huntington native and award winning Christian artist Jonathan E. Jackson will be the show's opening act and will take the stage at 7 p.m. Grammy award winner Bob Carlisle, best known for his hit, "Butterfly Kisses," is headlining the concert.

"Wave of Compassion" is part of a local campaign to raise $50,000 to aid tsunami victims. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to Compassion of Agape, a non-profit organization in Cochin, India.

Jackson and several members of the Huntington community plan to travel to India March 28 to personally deliver the donation.

Compassion of Agape has designated this money to build two orphanages that will house more than 200 children who lost their parents in the disaster.

"What's neat about this project is that you can actually see where your money goes," Jackson said. "You can watch videos and view pictures from the trip on my Web site. Track the whole visit and see where your money goes," Jackson said.

Through various fund-raisers, his group has been able to gather about $3,000., he said.

This weekend, a truck will be set up in the Huntington Mall to collect shoppers' spare change in its bed.

The orphanages are being built in Kanykumari and Kollam, located at the southernmost tip of India. the two worst hit areas in India. The $50,000 will also be used to fully equip the orphanages.

Jackson will be visiting India for 11 days and says that construction will start as soon as C.O.A. receives the donation.

The benefit concert is the biggest fundraiser in the local's tsunami campaign. Jackson said he hopes to see at least 5,000 people attend and is depending on Marshall University's students to help him reach the $50,000 mark.

Bob Carlisle, the concert's headliner, has won multiple Dove awards and sold more than three million copies of his hit song "Butterfly Kisses."

"Bob Carlisle was a perfect choice because he's very inspirational. He writes about stuff and it touches you so much that you feel like you could have written it yourself," Jackson said.

Jackson himself is also an accomplished singer. In 2003, he won the Academy of Gospel Music's Nashville Song of the Year.

Jackson said he is excited to perform in Huntington and hopes that the community supports this project and the people of India.

"I plan on rocking the house," Jackson said.

Tickets are on sale at Ticket Master locations, area Christian bookstores, UPS stores, Empire Books at Pullman Square and the Field House box office.
