Marshall University is scheduled to have a computer equipment sale Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the university's receiving department at 201 21st St.
Chuck Elliot, associate director of customer services, said the sale would be similar to past sales.
"We've identified five computers that will be sold as individual units," Elliot said. "We're going to install the operating system on those and at least one will be Windows XP, one will be 98, and I think the other is Windows 2000."
UCS must remove any pre-existing information on all auctioned computer equipment to ensure that the computers are void of confidential information. Therefore, all the computer hard drives have been erased and reformatted. UCS then adds some fundamental software components.
"We will install the operating system," Elliot said. "We will install the free anti-virus software that's available on the Internet, and we'll probably install the Open Office software, which has word processing, spreadsheet, and all of that so people will have something to use."
Open Office is a free open-source competitor to Microsoft Office.
The auction will include approximately 150 computers sold in lots of five or more, with minimum bids on some lots. Also, the sale will include monitors and possibly networking equipment.
