Dr. Bryan Payne has joined Marshall's medical school as a professor and chairman of the new department of neuroscience.
Payne is board-certified in neurosurgery. He will be covering trauma services at Cabell Huntington Hospital in addition to accepting appointments at his own practice.
"We are extraordinarily fortunate in our community and our medical school to be able to recruit a superb surgeon with such outstanding training, experience and overall credentials in neurological surgery," Charles H. McKown, vice president of health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine, said.
Payne is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and received his medical degree from the University of Louisville. He completed surgery and neurosurgery residencies at Louisiana State University, where he was selected chief resident in neurosurgery and completed a fellowship in gamma knife radiosurgery at the University of Virginia and functional neurosurgery at Emory University.
Payne has served as an associate professor of neurosurgery at Louisiana State University and section head of radiosurgery and stereotactic neurosurgery. He has served as medical director of the New Orleans Regional Gamma Knife Center, clinical instructor of neurosurgery at Emory University and medical director of functional neurosurgery at the Touro Infirmary, a community-based hospital in New Orleans.
McKown said the development of the department of neuroscience is a logical and necessary step forward for the School of Medicine.
"With new demands in medical education and expanding opportunities for clinical services, it is imperative that the medical school develop the new department to complement our teaching and training responsibilities and fully utilize the newer medical services available in that field, particularly as it relates to our synergistic affiliation with the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center," McKown said.
The department of neuroscience will include sections of neurological surgery, clinical neurophysiology and neurology. Recruitment for the department is ongoing.
