David Felinton, Huntington Mayor, kicked off Homecoming 2005 celebrations by declaring this week Marshall University Week in the City of Huntington.

Felinton announced the proclamation at a press conference in the Alumni Office Monday and said the week was designated to honor and celebrate Marshall, its alumni and current students.

Felinton also noted the achievements of Marshall students in the classroom, the more than 80,000 alumni of Marshall in the Tri-State Area and the step up to Conference USA among the other reasons for the designation of Marshall University Week.

"It's a great opportunity to showcase the great things that are happening here at Marshall and in the city," Felinton said. "This is in recognition of Marshall University and its thousands of students and alumni who have such a positive influence on our city and the surrounding area."

The Marshall University Alumni Association has paired with the City of Huntington and Pullman Square for a pre-game celebration, Friday from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. in Pullman Square, which will feature live music and food.

Felinton said the event in Pullman Square is a good time to show off the recent additions to the city.

"A lot of people haven't been to Huntington in a while, and we're really excited to showcase what's been happening downtown," he said.

Sharon Porter, executive committee president of the Marshall Alumni Association, said Homecoming week is a tradition students need to remember to participate in once they have moved on from the university.

"I hope students have a great time and I hope they realize the importance of coming back; I hope they never forget to come back and give back," Porter said. "Once they get that degree and leave Marshall, wherever it takes them, I hope they know this was their first step."

Mike Hines, Homecoming committee volunteer, also announced at the press conference the addition of a $500 award for the best band in the Homecoming parade, along with the usual trophy awards.
