Although the Cam Henderson Center pool is a far cry from any river, the Whitewater Club and Red Bull sponsoring kayaking instructions that are sure to make a splash.

Professional kayakers, Tanya Shuman and Brian Kirk, among others, will provide instruction and show off a few techniques. Participants are also invited to test out the newest WAVE SPORT kayaks.

"This is great opportunity to try out this sport in a safe environment with some of the best kayakers in the country instructing you," Jim Denvir, faculty adviser for the Whitewater Club said. "Plus, it's free!"

Team WAVE SPORT members as well as MUWC members will provide instruction to kayakers of all levels of experience. A private viewing of the latest kayaking film made by WAVE SPORT and Red Bull will also follow today's event.

"It's exciting for Tanya and Brian to come to Marshall because people pay big money for their instruction, so this is a good opportunity for students to interact with these medal winning kayakers and promote the sport," Heath Damron, president of the Whitewater Club, said.

The Marshall University Whitewater Club was founded in 2005 by Heath Damron, Chris Barry and faculty adviser Jim Denvir. The club sponsors regular instructional sessions throughout the year in the Cam Henderson Center pool, as well as whitewater river trips throughout the year.

All students and faculty are welcome to attend a pool session free of charge to get a taste for the sport, however repeated attendance and participation in trips requires club membership, according to Whitewater Club policy. During the spring semester the Whitewater Club has planned additional events such as a trip to the National Paddling Film Festival in Lexington, Ky., Feb. 17 to 18.
