For many people, the holiday season is filled with music, food and friends.
Students at Marshall can find all three Saturday, Dec. 10 at a Christmas dance sponsored by the International Association for Jazz Education.
The dance will be in the Don Morris Room in the Memorial Student Center and the Marshall Jazz Band will provide live music for the event. Tickets will include a buffet of finger foods and a visit from Santa.
Dr. Edwin Bingham, director of jazz studies, said the style of music is perfect for the occasion.
"Jazz grew up as entertainment," he said. "The roots of the music came from dance halls and things that people were doing live to be part of a musical culture and a musical environment; This music is great for dancing."
Holly Linn, historian for IAJE, said jazz music is the only style of music she would consider for this type of event.
"I think jazz music is so under appreciated," she said. "Jazz really is America's music because it was created here. I think it's so wonderful that we can celebrate Christmas and jazz at the same time."
The Christmas dance is a fundraiser for the organization to aid the cost of students attending the international conference in January.
Linn said the dance will support the organization she loves, but it will also allow students to take a break from the stress from the semester.
"It's a great way for everyone to get together and relax," she said. "If a couple wants to go, it's a chance for a romantic date; If a group of friends want to go together to listen to some good music and eat good food, it would be a fun time for them as well. Either way, it will be supporting a great cause."
Tickets for the event may be purchased by sending an e-mail to linn3@marshall.edu or inquiring in the music department office in Smith Music Hall. Ticket prices for general admission are $10 for singles and $18 for couples. Students who present their Marshall ID may purchase single tickets for $8 and couples tickets for $12.
