Bonnie Ross, the work control technician at the Department of Residence Services, is accepting donations for a Louisiana family who lost everything.

Jeff and Jordan Sturgill, victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans are receiving donations thanks to Jeff's brother Jason, who asked Ross if she could do anything to help the family.

"I sent a letter out on Sept. 19 about receiving any kind of donations," Ross said.

Students from Marshall have helped by donating different items to the Sturgill family.

"I think that it is a good idea. If somebody needs help then why not help them out," Andrea Maynard, a freshman radiology tech major, said.

The Biology Club got together and donated school supplies for Jordan.

"We just sent loose leaf paper, notebooks, pencils and pens. We got him a Domino set, twinkles and we actually gave him some money to spend on his own," Jessica Young, president of the Biology Club and a sophomore biology major, said.

"I think that it is really great because the students care enough," Cheyenne Donahue, a freshman biology major, said.

Ross has been collecting donations and Sturgill has been taking the items to his brother. The Sturgill family has lived in New Orleans for 17 years. Since the Hurricane Katrina disaster, the family returned to Huntington.

"They are going to stay in Huntington," Sturgill said.

Jeff has a car but has lost everything else he once had. Ross is taking any kind of donations such as money, clothes or school supplies. It is hard to determine what one item the Sturgill family will need most because they are not in permanent housing yet, Ross said.

The family is living right now with friends and family, according to the Department of Residence Services memo.

Jordan Sturgill is a nine-year-old boy who wears a size seven shoe and an extra large size shirt in boys. Jeff Sturgill is the father who wears a 32 x 36 pant size. He wears an extra large shirt and an 11 to 11 1/2 shoe size, according to the Department of Residence Services memo. Ross is still collecting donations for the family.

"She was very nice to do this for me," Sturgill said.

Donations can be given to Ross in the Department of Residence Services in Holderby Hall. She can be contacted at 696-3363.
