The Greek community at Marshall is making an active effort to help those victimized by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

In light of the disaster, many different organizations are trying to contribute in any way they can. For instance, the Alpha Phi Alpha and Sigma Tau Gamma fraternities have combined their efforts and established a relief fund called "K-Relief."

The groups collected donations Wednesday in the Memorial Student Center.

Kyle Blethen, a senior member of STG, said the donation table was only set up one day, but relief efforts would continue.

"We hope to make as much as we can today," he said. "Hopefully, people take a cue from us and do what they can to help out. We really want the rest of the Greek community to get involved and help do something for others."

Another fundraiser is the "Books For Kids" drive, which was created to help the children who are stranded in the Superdome in New Orleans with nothing to do.

"We'll be going around to stores and local libraries buying books," senior Yiorgie Alexandropoulos of STG said. "This isn't just something we're doing though. Hopefully it's something all the Greeks will be contributing to. Anyone can help out, of course, and we encourage a lot of the frats to donate books, children's books or coloring books."

All books collected will be placed on a truck in Huntington's West End. Once it is full, it will be sent to New Orleans to aid the victims.

Books, however, are not all they will receive.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority will hold a carwash this Saturday at Papa John's pizza. It will begin at 2:30 p.m. and end about 6 p.m. The money will be used to buy canned food and clothes, which will also go on the truck. Tiffany Caldwell, president of AKA, said she expects a big turnout.

"There will be about ten girls there from our chapter," Caldwell said. "We are expecting a big crowd because it will be after the game and everyone will be driving on Hal Greer."

The Alpha Phi Omega organization will also be accepting donations which will go to Camp Dawson. They are asking for clothes, games, coloring books, pens, pencils or toys.

Members of Alpha Tau Omega said they plan to take relief donations at the next Marshall football game. Members of the Delta Chi (DC) fraternity say they also have a relief effort planned for the near future.

"We're busy right now with our recruiting," Chris Childers, president of DC, said. "But we'd definitely like to do something soon and we have a few ideas in the works."
