Students interested in the West Virginia Higher Education Grant but have not filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) have until Friday file.

To be eligible for the Higher Education Grant students must be West Virginia residents and complete the FAFSA.

Jack Toney, director of financial assistance, said that since the Higher Education Grant must be submitted by March 1 students who have not yet filed the FAFSA may want to do so online.

Students wanting to file online can do so at www.fafsa.ed.gov. To complete the application, the student must apply for a PIN number in order to file electronically and avoid having to sign the form and mail it in. The PIN number can be obtained from the U.S. Department of Education on the web at www.pin.ed.gov

"If it is done immediately or fairly immediately, then there is still time to meet that requirement," Toney said.

Students who are not eligible for the West Virginia Higher Education Grant, such as metro or non-resident students, still have plenty of time to file the FAFSA.

"Students should be encouraged to complete the form as soon as possible but after March 1 they can still follow through with that process," Toney said.

"Students should be aware that the longer they wait to file the form they minimize their opportunities for grant assistance," Toney said.

Toney added that students would not necessarily receive less assistance by filing at a later date but students may be more likely to receive loan based assistance rather than grant based assistance.

Toney also said that students not interested in the Higher Education Grant should file by mid-April at the latest. The deadline for the FAFSA to be submitted on-line for the 2001-2002 year is July 1, 2002.
