The Biology Club is taking a fall semester trip to the Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area Saturday, Oct. 22.

"The Biology Club is a club that is designed for students who are interested in the Biological Sciences. We are very interested in visiting places that are of interest to the biological community as a whole," Kristy Doyle, vice president of the Biology Club and a senior microbiology major, said.

The Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area is an area with a lot of diverse wildlife which ranges from 30 species of mammals, 105 species of birds, to five species of reptiles, Doyle said.

"Luckily, we attend a university that is in West Virginia, which has many areas that are ecologically intact and important," she said.

Ecologically just means the relationship between organisms and their environment.

Students can benefit from going to the Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area by experiencing what they are studying in class, Doyle said.

"Fortunately, we are able to visualize first-hand the subjects that are covered in introductory biology, ecology and zoology by taking trips like the one we are taking to Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area Swamp," she said.

"I think that the trip is a good idea if it helps to further a students' education," Andrea Maynard, a freshman radiology tech, said.

Students who participate in this trip will get to see how organisms interact with the environment.

"I think that most of the students that are in the Biology Club are interested in conservation of the environment, so to see this type of ecologically conserved area will give us a reason to continue our efforts to conserve the environment," Doyle said.

Some of the members of the Biology Club have been to Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area before, but they wanted to take the trip because they have not been there in a few years. Dr. Frank Gilliam, a professor of biology and the faculty advisor of the Biology Club, and other professors also will be attending the trip, Jessica Young, president of the Biology Club and a sophomore biology major, said.

"I think that we are going to take a couple other experts with us so that we actually know what the different things that we need to be looking at are and stuff like it," Young said.

The cost for the trip is going to be low, Doyle said.

"The only cost that we will have to cover is gas money, which will be covered either by the Biology Club's funds or by the students themselves," Doyle said.

Doyle can be contacted at bioclub@marshall.edu for more information.
