With the economy down, many people are spending their money more wisely. But paying less does not mean sacrificing quality or style when it comes to fashion.

Several stores in town offer discounted clothing from brand name stores. The newest addition is Global Liquidation Center, located on Fourth Avenue.

Manager Cheryl Wright said all items in the store were discounted at least 50 percent, and most were more.

"All items are a bargain to the everyday shopper," she said. "This is an opportunity to get the best look for your dollar."

The store carries clothing that is out of season or overstocked at other retailers. Their selection includes swimwear, childrens' clothing and tuxedos in addition to everyday apparel.

Some popular brands that can be found in Global Liquidation Center include Nautica, Tasso Elba, Sonoma and American Rag.

Wright said the downtown location of the store could also be a way to save money, because customers do not have to make a special trip. They can just stop in while they are downtown.

"Instead of driving all the way to Barboursville, now you can just walk downtown and save your gas money," she said.

Gabriel Brothers on Route 60 is another popular discount store close to campus. Manager Greg Smith said the store had seen an increase in sales since the economic downturn.

"The economy has driven price conscious shoppers to the store," he said. "With that savings they can spend their money on the staples of life that people may struggle to find money for."

Because Gabriel Brothers carries household items in addition to apparel, Smith said it is an ideal place for students to shop and save. They have items for dorm needs, including decor and some foods available for cheap.

Goodwill on Virginia Avenue is another retailer offering fashion for less.

Employee Cat McCloud said though some college students visit the store, she thinks not many people realize that the retailer carries brand name clothing.

Goodwill frequently carries items from Juicy Coture, South Pole, Polo and Coach.

"A lot of people look at Goodwill as if to shop here means you're in poverty" she said. "But that's not true. You don't have to be poor, you just have to be thrifty."

McCloud said there were shoppers who came in only to hunt for brand name items, and some even found pieces that looked similar to the fashions featured in magazines.

In addition to shopping at discount stores, students can save their money by buying sale items at their favorite stores or using coupons when they shop.
