Can't we all just get along at Marshall University?
I'm writing this letter as a member of the student body at Marshall University. I was completely appalled Monday morning when I went to pick up my daily issue of The Parthenon to read about all the weekend hubbub, and all I could see was the poor taste that was written about Marshall's greek life.
First of all, I am a student at Marshall and I feel as if I have my own say into what goes into our paper. I was saddened to see that somebody allowed someone to write a letter about another organization that was in such poor taste.
This person obviously had no idea what they were talking about and just spit out random facts. They called a sorority on campus ignorant and racist. To this, I laugh at the writer. I did some digging of my own and noticed that this sorority has three black members. Therefore, I'm sure they were more than highly offended at reading this article. To the idea that if you should have a redneck party, well thanks for the laughter again Ms. Gates, because no one cares if you have a party or not, and nobody is going to waste their time to go to the president about such a petty issue.
Why can't we all just get along? It was a harmless party that was themed for whatever reason.
Nobody, I'm sure, was purposely or accidentally poking fun at the "African-American" culture. I guess think what you want. Obviously, we can write about it. I just wanted to let my opinion out because she did. Once again this letter was written in poor taste, rushed judgement and obviously with no pre-planning. To the ladies of the sorority that was attacked, I tip my hats to you.
I'm sure you have to go through a lot of scrutiny and a lot of drama because of this, so remain strong. Maybe we can learn something we may have forgotten in our college days and that is not to judge and think before speaking. It's a basic fifth-grade lesson that obviously bares repeating!

Further Response
This is a response to the letter published Oct. 6.
I have friends in both Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Chi Omega, and none have expressed any racist opinions. The only prejudice I've noticed around the greek community is the one this paper seems to have against us.
By the way, your hypothetical "redneck party" isn't so hypothetical.
It's a pretty common party theme, and no, I wouldn't be offended if an African-American fraternity were to hold one.
I, along with the rest of Marshall's greek community, would appreciate it if this publication would stop its vilification of us.

MU Web site never available when needed
When I hear the words "Marshall" and "technology" combined into one sentence, I am often left with a bitter taste in my mouth.
During this stressful semester, I am quite often using my e-mail and other Internet services from Marshall's Web site.
Many times I am e-mailing my professors assignments and communicating with organization leaders on campus. There is no greater technological service I depend on more at Marshall than myMU.
Four times throughout this semester alone I distinctly recall myMU and Marshall's site being down for a period of more than 24 hours.
I greatly appreciate the services those who take care of the technology provided. They do a phenomenal job at maintaining our equipment.
What worries me most, however, is the frequency that our online services are down. What will happen when we scramble to register for classes for next semester?
I hope a solution is found to the sporadic uptime of Marshall.edu and myMU.
