The odds are against you.
The RIAA has filed about 360 pre-litigation forms with Marshall in the past year for illegally downloading music. A reportedly understaffed University Computer Services is upset after managing the RIAA's requests and students who refuse to quit illegally downloading.
Now, UCS has decided to charge a $50 network reconnection fee after the first illegal downloading offense, and $100 every reconnection thereafter. This fee also is meant to make up for the any hassle UCS endured.
No doubt about it - it is wrong to illegally download music. But even if you are aware of your mistake, no one has your back now. If the RIAA doesn't give it to you, UCS surely will.
Therefore, it is time to say goodbye to free tunes. Sad, maybe. But, really, just buy the CDs or pay for downloads. In the long run, it will be the cheapest way to go. Students pay enough for college as it is. At least when you lay down the cash for a CD, the money will go to your favorite artists - not the university or lawyers.
Don't let the RIAA or UCS take advantage of your fearlessness. Just buy your music, please.
