As the raining drops of water come to a halt and the Memorial Fountain is silenced once again this Nov. 14 until next spring, the Marshall community will solemnly come together for another year in remembrance of the most tragic event in the university's history.
The 75 victims of the 1970 Marshall plane crash will be remembered in the annual memorial service conducted in their honor at noon Friday. The keynote speaker for the service will be Marshall alumnus and CNN correspondent Joe Johns.
For 364 days a year we may pass the Memorial Fountain on the way to class or for a bite to eat. Often it is easy to ignore this grand landmark on the Marshall campus. That is understandable because we all lead busy lives, but we encourage everybody to stop this Nov. 14 and reflect, even if for a moment.
Each person will take a different meaning from the ceremony. Perhaps there is no better message than the one that is already placed on the bronze plaque next to the fountain:
"They shall live on in the hearts of their families and friends forever and this memorial records their loss to the university and to the community."
