The West Virginia Higher Education Grant Program has been around since the mid-1960s.
Structured as a need-based program, the grant is available to West Virginia residents with a minimum 2.0 gpa. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and have it filed by March 1 to establish financial need. The grant covers 70 percent of tuition and fee charges.
Students obtaining a four-year graduate degree currently receive $1,376 a semester and two-year undergraduate students receive $985 a semester.
This semester, 1,052 Marshall students receiving the grant, a disbursement total of about $1.3 million.
The grant program requires academic progression; a student must complete 24 credit hours during the course of the school year.
If a student fails to meet the 24-credit-hour completion or drops below a 2.0 gpa, the student will not be eligible for the next school year. Deficiencies cannot be made up during the summer.
If a student has lost eligibility, it can be regained with good academic progress.
Funds are sent directly to the institution the recipient is attending, occurring during the enrollment period, and is applied toward payment of tuition and fees.
